His first marriage in 1570 was to Catherine, Princess of Brandenburg-Küstrin (1549–1602), daughter of John I, Margrave of Brandenburg-Küstrin, and Catherine, Duchess of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Joachim Frederick's second marriage, in 1603, was to Eleonore of Hohenzollern (1583–1607), daughter of Albert Frederick, Duke of Prussia and Mary Eleonore of Cleves.

Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (Frederick Augustus; 16 August 1763 – 5 January 1827) was the second son of George III, King of the United Kingdom and Hanover, and his consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A soldier by profession, from 1764 to 1803 he was Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück in the Holy Roman Empire.
