Stephens werd geboren in Aberdeen, waar zijn ouders vandaan kwamen, of in Londen, waar hij opgroeide. Ten gevolge van een ongeval in 1837 raakte hij gehandicapt en kreeg een privé-opleiding.

  6. Frederic George Stephens. Born 10th October 1827, Walworth. Art critic and historian. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1844 where he met Millais and Holman Hunt with whom he joined to found the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848. He realized he was not going to succeed as a painter and destroyed all but six of his works.

  7. Frederic George Stephens (1827 – 9 March 1907) was an art critic, and one of the two 'non-artistic' members of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Stephens was born to Septimus Stephens of Aberdeen and Ann (née Cooke) in Walworth, London and grew up in nearby Lambeth.
