[1] He married, firstly, Lady Jean Hay, daughter of William Hay, 6th Earl of Erroll and Lady Helen Stuart, circa 16 June 1552. [1] By his marriage with Jean the male heirs and the female heirs were united.
Hay was the eldest surviving son of eight children born to Eliza Amelia Gore and William Harry Hay, 19th Earl of Erroll. His paternal grandparents were William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll and Elizabeth Hay, Countess of Erroll (the illegitimate daughter of William IV by his mistress Dorothea Jordan ).
The Earl and Countess had two sons and two daughters: Harry Thomas William Hay, Lord Hay (b. Basingstoke, 8 August 1984); married Clementine Travis in 2017. Lady Amelia Diana Jacqueline Hay (b.
