Coppola and American Zoetrope acquired the screen rights to Alysia Abbott’s Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father, a coming-of-age account of Abbott growing up with her single father — widowed poet and gay activist Steve Abbott — amid the AIDS epidemic in 1970s and 1980s San Francisco.
Zoetrope also provided the foundation for the next step in filmmaking: electronic nonlinear editing. In 1989, Zoetrope defied industry standards by editing The Godfather Part III using the Montage Picture Processor, a precursor to today's digital Avid® editing systems. Today, American Zoetrope continues to use and provide optimal equipment.
