Much like his characters Clarence and Alabama, the story of the film going from box-office bomb to cult classic is a bumpy one, replete with production mishaps, on-set romances, and changed endings.
They head for Los Angeles to sell the goods and begin a new life. But both sides of the law have other ideas. Scripted by Quentin Tarantino, this violent, darkly comic romance follows a nerdy comic book store clerk who falls for a beautiful call girl and takes her on the run with him after accidentally murdering her pimp and stealing his cocaine.
Alabama's volatile pimp, Drexl Spivey (Gary Oldman), makes Clarence uneasy. An apparition of his idol, Elvis Presley (Val Kilmer), tells him that killing Drexl will make the world a better place. Clarence stands up to the intimidating Drexl and tells him to leave Alabama alone. Drexl assaults and subdues Clarence and takes his wallet.
Though TRUE ROMANCE is often talked about as a Tarantino film, it’s Scott who keeps the pace going, the action on track, and the story front and center. The film clocks in at a brisk two hours, and it noticeably lacks the indulgent scenes that Tarantino would become famous for when he started making his own films where a couple of very verbal characters would go off on a tangent.
