John Everett Millais entstammte einer Mittelklassefamilie aus Jersey. Seine Eltern waren John William Millais (1800–1870) und Mary Evamy (1789–1864). Zwischen 1833 und 1838 lebte er in St. Helier, Jersey, und in Dinan, Bretagne.
