FAGARA’s warmth is delicately geographic, as the women move between Hong Kong, Taipei, and Chongqing as comfortably as stops on a subway station. The transnational intimacy also plays through its star-sprinkled cast, including multi-national celeb Kenny Bee and Taiwanese star Richie Jen as a romantically hopeful doctor.
While Lai and Li are solid enough in their matriarchal mini-dramas, Mak finds the heart of the film in Cheng’s memories and visions of her father, leading to an emotional climax far more moving than it probably has any right to be. While Cheng has the starring role, Andy Lau is the biggest name in Fagara’s cast.

In that way, Fagara actually promotes Chinese soft power better than any jingoistic film backed by Beijing.

Fagara passed our acid test with flying colours - throughout the 30-minute journey home, the missus and I were discussing the movie animatedly, drawing on parallels with our lives and little nuggets of nuances continued to surface. This is a gem and truly the first good film from Hong Kong this year that isn't an action genre flick.
The film marks the astonishingly assured return to feature directing of former prodigy Heiward Mak Hei-yan, who made her promising debut at age 23 with teen drama High Noon (2008), but has fallen off the radar a bit since she made a pair of poorly received commercial films " idiosyncratic relationship drama Ex (2010) and superficial showbiz satire Diva (2012) " and endured battles with depression.
