While Lai and Li are solid enough in their matriarchal mini-dramas, Mak finds the heart of the film in Cheng’s memories and visions of her father, leading to an emotional climax far more moving than it probably has any right to be. While Cheng has the starring role, Andy Lau is the biggest name in Fagara’s cast.
FAGARA’s warmth is delicately geographic, as the women move between Hong Kong, Taipei, and Chongqing as comfortably as stops on a subway station.
