15 de ene. de 2020 · “Lucian Freud: The Self-Portraits” charts the artistic development of the renowned British figurative painter through the unique lens of self-portraiture. Best known for his portraits of his acquaintances, Lucian Freud (1922–2011) painted his subjects with compositional ingenuity, technical virtuosity, and a critical eye, and was no less rigorous when depicting himself.
The mid- to late-1950s marked a decisive shift in Freud’s paintings, when he moved away from stark, flattened portraits and turned to fleshy explorations of the human face. This was partly due to his friendship with the artist Francis Bacon, whom he met in the late 1940s and whose thick, loose style of painting motivated Freud to change direction.

The book features over 130 paintings, drawings and etchings selected in close collaboration with the artist.
Lucian Freud stated that “my idea of portraiture came from dissatisfaction with portraits that resembled people. I would wish my portraits to be of people, not like them.” Such a confession denotes a certain amount of philosophical anguish as it presupposes that the artist, when painting somebody, is to an extent condemning them.
