29 de jun. de 2020 · 3. MIGHTY JOE YOUNG. Ray Harryhausen burst into feature films with this delightful kiddie matinée staple from 1949 that’s co-produced by John Ford! Listed in the opening credits as First Technician, Ray was working alongside his idol Willis O’Brien, the effects wiz that brought KING KONG to life on-screen back in 1933.
31 de ene. de 2023 · The film’s popularity helped spawn dozens of creature features in the 1950s, many of which utilized fears of the atomic age in order to scare audiences. Harryhausen made several such films during this period, including It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955), Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956) and 20 Million Miles to Earth (1957).
4. First Men in the Moon. This entertaining tale of a Victorian space voyage to the Moon is a questionable choice on this list--if one goes strictly by the quantity of Harryhausen's special effects. There are few spectacular set pieces in this H.G. Wells fantasy, but the film is well-made and nicely acted, almost on par with Mysterious Island.
A series of screenings and lectures have been announced by the Science Museum Oklahoma, in collaboration with the Ray and Diana Harryhausen Foundation, to celebrate the ‘Mythical Menagerie’ exhibition.
