During his lifetime, British director Jack Clayton was rarely cited as a top woman’s director, perhaps because his output was so small and his subject matter so varied. He won his only Oscar for his witty, pungent short film The Bespoke Overcoat (1955), a thirty-six-minute riff on Gogol that contained no women at all.
