Kate Mundy (Streep) is the eldest of five sisters living together in a small house in Ireland in 1936. The only one with a steady job, Kate oversees the various conflicting personalities. Though none of the women is married, Christina (McCormack) has a young son named Michael.
Set in the fictional Irish village of Ballybeg, Ireland, Dancing at Lughnasa is a memory play, told from the perspective of an adult Michael. He recalls one summer he spent at his aunts' home when he was seven years old. The five Mundy sisters, all unmarried, live in a big cottage just outside of the small village.
Dancing at Lughnasa is told from his memories, summoning back to the end of that summer, on the eve of celebration to the harvest diety Lugh, god of music and light. But the celebration of the film . . . the music and the light of it . . . really lives within the sisters, a gift they share with each other and the ones they love.
Dancing at Lughnasa is a captivating exploration of memory and longing. In rural Ireland, the Mundy sisters seek solace in each other, and the radio that keeps them connected to their roots. As they navigate the challenges of family, love and societal change, the women revisit their rituals and memories of happier times.
