She was born Ehrengard Melusine von der Schulenburg on 25 December 1667 in Emden in the Duchy of Magdeburg to Gustavus Adolphus, Baron von der Schulenburg, Privy Councillor to the Elector of Brandenburg, and his wife, Petronella Ottilie von Schwencken.
