Philippine Welser (1527-80) was the morganatic wife of Ferdinand II Habsburg, Archduke of Austria. The couple married in secret in 1557. Although the Archduke’s father, Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor (1503-1564) officially recognised the union in 1559, Philippine Welser was still not permitted to make any official appearances as Ferdinand II’s consort.
