Portrait of Federico II Gonzaga. Portrait of Federico II Gonzaga ( c. 1529) is a painting by Titian, who signed it Ticianus f.. Today in the Museo del Prado, Madrid, it portrays Federico II, Duke of Mantua who married in 1529; the portrait may have been commissioned for the occasion. The dog, a Maltese, is a symbol of faithfulness.
Federico’s detainment would allow for the release of his father, Francesco II Gonzaga (1466–1519), who was in Venetian custody for his part in the War of the League of Cambrai. En route to surrender himself, the young Gonzaga stopped in Bologna where he met with his already liberated father, and sat for Francia, who made sketches of him for this portrait.[1]

Educated at the French and Papal courts, he inherited the Marquisate from his father in 1519, initially under the regency of his mother and his uncles Sigismondo and Giovanni Gonzaga .

Francisco Gonzaga e Isabel de Este tuvieron seis hijos: Leonor Gonzaga (1493-1550), casado con Francisco Maria della Rovere (1490-1538) duque de Urbino . Federico II Gonzaga (1500-1540), marqués de Mantua desde 1519 y duque de Mantua desde 1530, marqués de Monferrato de Rangel desde 1533, casado en 1531 con Margarita de Monferrato (1510-1566), hija del marqués Guillermo IX de Monferrato.
