RM2B01316 – China: Empress Xiao Yi Zhuang (-1558), consort of the 13th Ming Emperor Longqing (r. 1567-1572). Hanging scroll painting, 16th-17th century. Empress Xiaoyizhuang was the first consort of the Longqing Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. She married the emperor in 1553 and bore him three children but died in 1558.
Empress dowager. Empress Qian had no children, and when the Zhengtong Emperor died in 1464, he was succeeded by the Chenghua Emperor. She became involved in a conflict with Empress Xiaosu, the biological mother of the new emperor. As the mother of the emperor, Empress Xiaosu demanded the same title as Qian: that of empress dowager.
