General Robert Ellice (13 October 1784 – 18 June 1856)[1] was a British Army officer. Charles Richard Swayne CMG (1843–1921), born in Dublin, was the first Resident Commissioner of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands protectorate, from 1892 to 1895. The post was established in 1892 with the title 'Resident Commissioner' by Governor of Fiji John Bates Thurston after the islands were made a British protectorate , having previously been under the supervision of the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific .
