Wendy Hiller débute au théâtre en 1930, à Manchester, alors qu'elle est étudiante au Manchester Repertory Theatre. En 1934 , elle crée le rôle de Sally Hardcastle à Manchester, dans la pièce Love on the Dole (en) , adaptation du dramaturge britannique Ronald Gow ; elle reprend ce rôle à Londres en 1935 , en tournée au Royaume-Uni, puis à Broadway ( New York ) en 1936 .
