Murnau [ 2] and Josef von Sternberg, including 1930’s The Blue Angel, with Marlene Dietrich. He was the first Oscar recipient, honored with the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 1929 ceremony.
Emil Jannings, nato Theodor Friedrich Emil Janenz (Rorschach, 23 luglio 1884 – Strobl, 3 gennaio 1950) è stato un attore tedesco naturalizzato austriaco. Fu il massimo esponente del cinema del suo paese negli anni venti e trenta rappresentando egregiamente il tipo romantico-ottocentesco del grande attore di prosa.

Emil Jannings, geboren als Theodor Friedrich Emil Janenz am 23. Juli 1884 in Rorschach, Schweiz, als Sohn eines Deutschamerikaners, wuchs in Leipzig und Görlitz auf. Er verließ noch vor dem Abschluss das Gymnasium und arbeitete als Schiffsjunge, bis er 1900 eine Stelle als Volontär am Stadttheater Görlitz bekam.
