He was the youngest son of Edward Radclyffe, 2nd Earl of Derwentwater and Lady Mary Tudor.

James’s son Anthony James Radcliffe, Charles’s grandson, who resided at Slidon House in Sussex, died without heir in 1814 and so the title became extinct as well as de jure (by law).
