  3. Nathan Milstein wurde am 31. Dezember 1903 in Odessa (heute . Ukraine) als eines von sieben Kindern in eine jüdische Familie ge - boren. Als Siebenjähriger erhielt er Violinunterricht beim grossen Pädagogen Pyotr Stolyarsky, der auch der Lehrer des fünf Jah-re jüngeren, ebenfalls aus Odessa stammenden David Oistrach war.

At eleven, he journeyed to St. Petersburg, where he studied with Leopold Auer, also Heifetz’s teacher. Once Auer left for America as a result of the Revolution, Milstein was on his own. For a few years, he struggled in poverty.
