22 de abr. de 2024 · Spencer Perceval was 49 years old when he died and to date, he is the only British Prime Minister to have been assassinated. His last words were, reportedly, “murder” or “oh my God.” Parliament made generous provision to Jane Perceval, Spencer’s widow, and their children.
Spencer Perceval had gained the respect of most of his colleagues at Westminster. ‘His character is completely established in the House of Commons; he has acquired an authority there beyond any minister in my recollection, except Mr Pitt,’ was what one future Prime Minister, Liverpool, wrote of him to another, Wellington.
Spencer Perceval var en yngre søn af den irske adelsmand John Perceval (1711–1770), der var den 2. jarl af Egmont. I modsætning til de fleste af datidens britiske premierministre blev Perceval aldrig adlet. I 1930'erne arvede Spencer Percevals efterkommere titlen som jarl af Egmont. En titel, som de beholdt, indtil den 12. jarl døde i 2011.
