Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim died on January 28 (Finnish time, January 27 local time), 1951 in the Cantonal hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland. He was buried on February 4, 1951, in the Hietaniemi cemetery in Helsinki in a state funeral with full military honors, and today retains respect as one of Finland's greatest statesmen.

Friherre (Baron) Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim (1867-1951) was born to the Swedish-speaking nobility of the Grand-Duchy of Finland. His father, Count Carl Robert Mannerheim (1835-1914) , had left the family after the collapse of his business and fled to Paris with his mistress, leaving the children alone with their mother, Countess Hélène Mannerheim (1842-1881) .
