Stefan Stambolov (1854 – 1895) was a Bulgarian revolutionary, poet and journalist, builder of New Bulgaria. A controversial figure, criticized for the dictatorial methods with which he ruled, he is one of the most significant politicians in our New History.
He shows how Stambolov stabilized the Bulgarian economy and brought relative security to the land--but not without cost to himself and his regime. Perry depicts a man whose promotion of Bulgaria's independence exacted its price in individual rights, a ruler whose assassination in 1895 was the cause of both rejoicing and sorrow.

30 de jul. de 2018 · Born in Tarnovo, Stefan Stambolov engaged in the clandestine movement for independence from the Ottomans while he was still a teenager. In 1876 he was the leader of a conspiracy in the Tarnovo region. When the April Uprising broke a few days before schedule, in Panagyurishte, Stambolov failed to raise a sufficient number of rebels.
