William George Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire,, styled Marquess of Hartington until 1811, was a British peer, courtier, nobleman and Whig politician. Known as the "Bachelor Duke", he was Lord Chamberlain of the Household between 1827 and 1828 and again between 1830 and 1834.

Had a strong interest in gardening and agriculture and gave his estates a lot of attention. When Lord William Cavendish was born on 14 December 1748, in Hardwick, Derbyshire, England, his father, William Cavendish 4th Duke of Devonshire, was 28 and his mother, Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle, was 17. He married Lady Georgiana Spencer on 7 June 1774, in Wimbledon, Surrey, England.
Lord Chamberlain The son of William and Georgiana, Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Cavendish succeeded to the dukedom in 1811. He never married, earning him the epithet the 'Bachelor Duke'. Although he was a Whig grandee and served as Lord Chamberlain to both George IV and William IV, Devonshire's interests were primarily cultural. He was one of Landseer's most important patrons.
