11 de ago. de 2023 · Stephen Douglas was the only son and second-born of two children of Stephen Arnold Douglas and Sarah Fisk Douglass. Stephen Douglass dropped the last “s” in the family name later in life. Stephen Douglas’s father was a successful physician who died unexpectedly of a heart attack on July 1, 1813, just nine weeks after his son’s birth.

Stephen Arnold Douglas, best known for his career in national politics and his antebellum political rivalry with Abraham Lincoln, began life inauspiciously enough in rural Vermont. The son of a country doctor, Douglas was educated in common schools and later completed his preparatory education at the Canandaigua Academy in Canandaigua, N.Y.
His father was Stephen Arnold Douglass (The younger Stephen dropped the second “s” in his name in 1846). His mother was Sara “Sally” Fisk Douglass. Stephen’s father was a physician but died in 1815 when Stephen was three months old. Sara Douglas moved to her brother Edward’s farm, where Stephen lived for the next 17 years.
