Paul François Jean Nicolas Vicomte de Barras entstammte einer adeligen Familie aus der Provence und wurde in Fox-Amphoux, im heutigen Departement Var, am 30.06.1755 geboren. Im Alter von 16 Jahren trat er als cadet gentilhomme in das Regiment Languedoc ein, und wurde im Jahre 1776 nach Indien eingeschifft.
