The relationship was arranged between Anna and Franz Joseph without the knowledge of her spouse. This arrangement continued also after she remarried the decadent Franz Nahowski. In 1889, Nahowski discovered that Franz Joseph was in parallel involved, and this time more publicly, with Katharina Schratt, which made Franz Joseph end the relationship to Nahowski.

For fourteen years, from 1875 to 1888, Emperor Franz Joseph engaged in an affair with a young Viennese woman, Anna Nahowski. What is known about the relationship comes almost entirely from two lengthy diaries written by Anna, who referred to her accounts as Tagebucher, although they resemble informal memoirs more than daybooks.
