  4. John, lawful 17th Earl of Mar, 10th Lord Garioch, 5th Lord Erskine. John married Margaret, daughter of Archibald, 2nd Earl of Argyll. Although seven years older than James VI, for whom his parents acted as guardians, he was educated as a Reformer in a similar regime under George Buchanan, and they remained confidantes.

Until his father's death in 1634, he was known as John, Lord Erskine, or the "Master of Mar". Prince Henry, the son of James VI and I and Anne of Denmark was kept at Stirling Castle.
