John, lawful 17th Earl of Mar, 10th Lord Garioch, 5th Lord Erskine. John married Margaret, daughter of Archibald, 2nd Earl of Argyll. He died in 1552 and was succeeded by his son, John 18th Earl of Mar, 11th Lord Garioch, 6th Lord Erskine. The 18th Earl was Regent of Scotland in 1571-72 and guardian of King James VI.

John Erskine, 2nd and 23rd Earl of Mar, was the son of the 1st Earl and Annabella Murray. He succeeded from his father in 1574. Although seven years older than James VI, for whom his parents acted as guardians, he was educated as a Reformer in a similar regime under George Buchanan, and they remained confidantes.
Career. He was the son of John Erskine, Earl of Mar (1558–1634) and Anne Drummond (1555-1587), daughter of Lord David Drummond (d. 1571) and Lilias Ruthven . Until his father's death in 1634, he was known as John, Lord Erskine, or the "Master of Mar". Prince Henry, the son of James VI and I and Anne of Denmark was kept at Stirling Castle.
