Gabor (Gabriel) Bethlen s-a născut în 1580 pe domeniul de la Ilia (Hunedoara) al unei vechi familii de nobili maghiari, care au deţinut demnităţi regale şi s-au remarcat în cariera armelor.El a rămas orfan la 13 ani şi, în urma unor intrigi, i-a fost confiscată proprietatea de către principele Sigismund Bathory (1581-1602) al Transilvaniei, aflată sub suzeranitate otomană din 1541.
Gabriel Bethlen a fost principe al Transilvaniei între 1613-1629 și începând cu 1619 lider al mișcării antihabsburgice din estul și nordul Ungariei în contextul Războiului de Treizeci de ani, în care Transilvania s-a situat de partea puterilor oponente Sfântului Imperiu Romano-German.
