She was born in 1620, and married, in 1639, Henry Spencer, Lord Spencer of Wormleighton, afterwards Earl of Sunderland. He was killed at the battle of Edgehill. leaving her a young widow of twenty-three, with a son and two daughters.
Dorothy was the daughter of Henry Spencer, 1st Earl of Sunderland, and his wife, the former Lady Dorothy Sidney (or Sydney). Lady Dorothy married George Savile on 29 December 1656, at St Giles in the Fields in London. They had two children: William Savile, 2nd Marquess of Halifax; Anne Savile, later Countess of Carbery (c.1663-1690)
