In 1531, George joined the Protestant Schmalkaldic League against Emperor Charles V. With the help of Landgrave Philip I of Hesse, his brother Ulrich was able to regain power in Württemberg. Ulrich re-purchased Montbéliard and in 1542, appointed his son Christopher as governor there.
When Count George I von Württemberg-Mömpelgard was born on 5 May 1498, in Hohen, Brachstedt, Saalkreis, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, his father, Heinrich von Württemberg, was 49 and his mother, Countess Eva Gräfin von Salm, was 30. He married Princess Barbara von Hessen on 10 September 1555, in Holy Roman Empire.
