Viète ‘s work on a algebra was an important step towards modern algebra, due to its innovative use of letters as parameters in equations. He was a lawyer by trade, and served as a privy councillor to both Henry III and Henry IV.
Viète, Francois (1540-1603) A non-professional French mathematician, also known under the latinized name of Vieta, who disclosed the way to modern symbolic algebra. He had a very brilliant legal career starting in his hometown Fontenay-le-Comte as the private lawyer of a noble family, and ended up as a personal counselor of King Henri III.
