George S. Kaufman. George Simon Kaufman was born in Pittsburgh on 16th November, 1889. His father, Joseph Kaufman, was an unsuccessful businessman. His mother, Henrietta Meyers Kaufman came from a wealthy family. They were married and had their first child, Helen, in 1884. A son, Richard, born two years later, only lived for seven months.
