Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, and was the son of John Augustine Washington. He graduated from the College of William and Mary, where he was one of the first members of Phi Beta Kappa.
Washington married three times. His first wife was his cousin Jane Washington (1759-1791), whom he married in 1777. Bushrod Washington was born at Bushfield in Westmoreland County, Virginia on June 5, 1762. His father, John “Jack” Augustine Washington, was the younger brother of George Washington and a delegate to the Virginia legislature and his mother, Hannah Bushrod Washington, was the daughter of a prominent Virginia family.
