The term “intersectionality” was introduced by feminist legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw at the end of the 1980s. Crenshaw ( 1991, 1242) pointed out how “racism and sexism readily intersect in the lives of real people” but how, at the same time, the understandings of discrimination failed to recognize the significance of such intersections.
