It was the capital of the small Principality of Lippe from 1468 until 1918 and then of the Free State of Lippe until 1947. Today it is the administrative center of the district of Lippe and of the Regierungsbezirk Detmold.

Schaumburg, or Schauenburg, northeast of Rinteln, was the ancestral seat of a line of counts recorded from the early 12th century. Lutheran from 1559, this line died out in 1640, and the lands were partitioned. One of the survivors, Schaumburg-Lippe, was admitted to the Confederation of the Rhine as a sovereign principality in 1807.
