There are a number of private palaces dating back to the 17th century. The main landmark is the church Riddarholmskyrkan, used as Sweden's royal burial church from the 17th century to 1950 ...
The exterior and surroundings are stunning. This part of town, Riddarholmen (The Knight’s Island, or Greyfriar’s Island) is underrated. Here you not only find this magnificent church or abbey, the oldest building in Stockholm, but also historical buildings and surroundings and best of all, no souvenir shops.

Riddarholmskyrkan härstammar från Gråbrödraklostret, som grundades av Magnus Ladulås, är en av Stockholms äldsta byggnader. När Gustav Vasa stängde klostret hade det funnits på Riddarholmen i drygt 300 år.

Discussion and conclusions In essence, the two braids from Riddarholmen Church and Alvastra Abbey are identically plaited, but only the Riddarholmen braid has picots sewn onto it. The metal threads from the two braids display a 0.06 mm difference in diameter, and only the metal threads from the Riddarholmen braid are gilded – the Alvastra braid metal threads are pure silver.
