This rank is denoted by the NATO rank code OF-9, surpassed only by the rank of admiral of the fleet. Officers holding the positions of rear admiral, vice admiral, and admiral of the fleet are collectively referred to as admirals.
Rear admiral (lower half) is equivalent to the rank of brigadier general in the United States Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Space Force and equivalent to the rank of commodore in most other navies. In the United States uniformed services, rear admiral (lower half) replaced the rank of commodore in 1985.

Whereas, generals hold equivalent top positions in non-naval branches, with ranks like brigadier general and major general. Admirals primarily focus on maritime strategies, including naval warfare, fleet deployment, and maritime security.
However, the rank of fleet admiral still remains listed on official rank insignia precedence charts and, if needed, this rank could be reestablished at the discretion of Congress and the President. All five-star officers are, technically, unable to retire from active duty. The last living fleet admiral, Chester W. Nimitz, died in 1966.
