Legend says it was founded by the mythical king Memphric or by Alfred the Great, but the first record of it dates from the late 1100s. The university may have started after English students were banned from the University of Paris in 1167 or 1168. After a dispute between students and townsfolk broke out in 1209, some of the academics at Oxford fled north-east to the town of Cambridge, where the University of Cambridge was founded.
