Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) set the Gloria text a number of times. A catalogue of his works lists three separate pieces, one of which is now lost. Vivaldi almost certainly composed this Gloria (and the others) for the girls at Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children in Venice in the early 18th century.

The 3rd movement of RV 639 is also cataloged as the 1st movement of RV 588. The movements marked with an asterisk were catalogued as RV 639 for reasons known only to Peter Ryom.

  7. The Gloria, part of that Turin collection, received its twentieth-century premiere in 1930 and has remained the most popular of all Vivaldi's vocal works ever since. In addition to concertos, Vivaldi was asked to write a good deal of religious music for the accomplished musicians at the Ospedale della Pietà, the girls' orphanage in Venice where he served as music director.
