Royal Holloway College and Bedford College merged in 1985. The pressure for the merger was due to a lack of government funding for higher education, and the college was named Royal Holloway and Bedford New College (RHBNC), with an inauguration being held at the College Chapel in 1986 by Elizabeth II.

In 1878, the University of London (a collective group of universities within London), allowed women to get their degrees for the first time. In 1900, both Bedford and Royal Holloway joined the University of London and later in 1985, they became known as Royal Holloway and Bedford New College.
The Centre is linked to the Royal Holloway Archives and Special Collections, which contain substantial collections relating to the history of Royal Holloway and Bedford New College. In 2016, we launched our Bedford Centre Blog in order to widen historical debates, engage with academics and the public in the UK and other countries; and to promote our research.
