No matter what he does, Serpico seems to find more corruption, and he increasingly becomes angrier until he finally snaps. The pivotal scene after getting back from the mayor's office is the best and most important part of the movie by far, where Pacino really shows his true colors as an actor, and Serpico shows his true anger.

Frank Serpico is a NYC cop who refuses to take bribes, unlike the rest of the force. His actions get Frank shunned by the other officers, and often placed in risky situations by his partners. When his superiors ignore Frank’s accusations of corruption, he decides to go public with the allegations.
Serpico's revelations trigger an independent investigation by the Knapp Commission, but they also make him a marked man, permanently changing his life. Shot on location with a gritty emphasis on documentary-style realism, Serpico presents a city in decay both literally and morally, as everybody is in on the take, and the cops and criminals are almost interchangeable.
