The land U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt loved North Dakota’s scenic badlands are the setting for Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Formed by 65 million years of geological turmoil, the bizarre multicolored rock formations, dramatic canyons and sweeping plains are home to elk, prairie dogs and about 500 bison that disappeared from the area in the late 1800s but were reintroduced in the 1950s.

He could not have imagined how his adventure in this remote and unfamiliar place would forever alter the course of the nation. The rugged landscape and strenuous life that TR experienced here would help shape a conservation policy that we still benefit from today.
