Maman 1999 is something rarer – a monumental mother, and a homage to the mother, by the great French–American artist Louise Bourgeois. ‘Maman’ is a term of childlike familiarity, similar to ‘mum’ or ‘mummy’ rather than ‘mother’. This intimacy only heightens our sense of the fantastical size and power of this spider.
Maman, de près de 9 mètres de hauteur, est l'une des sculptures les plus ambitieuses de Bourgeois ; elle appartient à une série qui s'inspire de l'araignée, un motif qui apparut pour la première fois dans plusieurs dessins réalisés par l'artiste dans les années 1940 et qui occupa une place centrale dans son œuvre dans les années 1990.
23 de feb. de 2024 · Maman, her 30 feet high spider, was not exhibited until 20 years later at the Tate Modern in London. When Tate Modern opened its doors in 1999, the museum commissioned Bourgeois as the first artist to exhibit her art in the massive Turbine Hall. Maman consisted of a tall steep spider sculpture representing both protection and benevolence.
