Grenville thus became one of the main supporters of the Stamp Act, probably the most inflammatory of all British policies in America. The Stamp Act was passed in March 1765 but was never effectively implemented due to protest and noncompliance in America. Grenville lost the confidence of George III, who forced his resignation in July 1765.
However, Grenville did not have to deal with the colonial problems that resulted in his policies because he was invited to resign by George III in July 1765. In the spring of 1765, George III had his first bout of mental illness which resulted in him becoming absent-minded and incoherent; he was unable to fulfil his duties as monarch.

His father, Richard, sat as an MP for Wendover and Buckingham but Grenville’s career was helped more by his mother’s brother, Richard Temple, Viscount Cobham of Stowe.
