Agnes Keith, Countess of Moray (c. 1540 – 16 July 1588) was a Scottish noblewoman. She was the wife of James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray , regent of Scotland and the illegitimate half-brother of Mary, Queen of Scots , making her a sister-in-law of the Scottish queen.

16 de jul. de 2021 · 16th July 1588 saw the death of Agnes Keith Countess of Moray. I don’t normally cover minor nobility in my posts, but it’s a wee bit quiet today and Lady Agnes is an interesting character who did well in a male orientated world.
For, whilst the Hamiltons had lost Dunbarton, Mary was honouring James with the grant of two earldoms – Moray on 30 th January 1562, and Mar on 7 th February. The first grant was, initially, kept secret, but the second made a splendid present for his wedding the following day, Shrove Tuesday, to Agnes Keith, daughter of the Earl Marischal.

As the wife of the regent, Agnes was the most powerful woman in Scotland from 1567 until her husband's assassination in 1570.

Brief Life History of Agnes. When Lady Agnes Keith was born on 14 July 1530, in Dunnottar, Kincardineshire, Scotland, her father, William Keith 4th Earl of Marischal, was 23 and her mother, Lady Margaret Keith of Inverugie, was 19. She married James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray on 8 February 1562, in Holyrood, Midlothian, Scotland.
