When the future Queen Victoria was born at Kensington Palace in 1819, she was fifth in line to the throne. However, by the time she was 18, a quick succession of deaths among her relatives accelerated her to accession. She accepted the crown as an inexperienced teenager; when she died, aged 81, she was known as ‘the Grandmother of Europe’.

These sketches then inspired the beautiful mini garments for her dolls made by her and Baroness Lehzen. For instance, one of the many drawings of Mademoiselle Taglioni as the title character of the ballet La Sylphide in Princess Victoria’s sketchbook in the Royal Collection, shares a strong resemblance with one of her wooden dolls.
When little Victoria grew weaker and suffered from a series of illnesses, Prince Albert, supported by his doctor and friend Baron Stockmar, held Lehzen responsible for it. But it took long struggles and discussions until Victoria was prepared to give in and when Lehzen finally was dismissed in 1842. Victoria and dear Lehzen stayed in contact.
