Caroline Matilda, Queen of Denmark and Norway, Princess of Great Britain and Ireland (a sister of George III.), was born at Leicester House, London, on Thursday, July 22, 1751. She was the ninth and youngest child of Frederick Prince of Wales and of his wife Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, and came into the world a little more than four months after her father’s death.
Princess Caroline Matilda, known in the family as Calma, was born at Callenburg Castle, near Coburg, on 22 June 1912, the fourth child and second daughter of Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and Victoria Adelaide of Schleswig-Holstein. Her paternal grandparents were Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany and Princess Helena, Duchess of Albany.

She married her cousin Christian VII of Denmark at the age of 15. They married at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen in 1766. Nobody had told her that the bridegroom was mentally ill. She had a son, Frederick, in 1768.

Caroline Matilda of Great Britain (Danish: Caroline Mathilde; 22 July [O.S. 11 July] 1751 – 10 May 1775) was Queen of Denmark and Norway from 1766 to 1772 by marriage to King Christian VII. The youngest and posthumous daughter of Frederick, Prince of Wales, by Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, Caroline Matilda was raised in a secluded family atmosphere away from the royal court.
