Mary Stuart, Countess of Bute, 1st Baroness Mount Stuart was the wife of John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, who was Prime Minister of Great Britain between 1762 and 1763. Background Lady Bute was born in 1718, the only daughter of Sir Edward Wortley Montagu and Lady Mary Pierrepont, the daughter of the Evelyn Pierrepont, 1st Duke of Kingston-upon-Hull.
The Bute Archive is housed at Mount Stuart on the Isle of Bute, the ancestral home of the Crichton-Stuart family or Marquesses of Bute. In 1989, the last member of the family to have resided there, the late John Crichton-Stuart, 6th Marquess of Bute (1933–1993) made over the house and grounds to a charitable trust which, in turn, opened Mount Stuart to the public in 1995.
